Objective: ESL 183LS students will host and expo: Global Children in Crisis Expo to raise awareness among Ohlone students about serious problems children face around the world.

Goals: ESL 183LS students will learn to complete a group project and be able to talk to Ohlone students one-on-one about a specific topic regarding children at risk.

Learning about the topic: Students will research their topic thoroughly.

Presenting their topic:
--Writing about the topic in order to raise awareness - Students will create a provocative table with 5 key elements (listed below) which will raise awareness about their topic. They will display this table on a given date in the student commons area of Ohlone College Newark Center.
--Talking about their topic : Students will be able to speak for at least 1-2 minutes one-on-one with Ohlone students and respond to student questions about their topic. They will walk around the public areas of Ohlone Newark with flyers and engage students in their topic. They will invite students to visit the "Global Children in Crisis Expo" in the common area at Ohlone

  4. What could an Ohlone Student do about this problem today?

Videos Due April 19 must be between 2-7 minutes, close captioned and looping.
Click on the document and copy and paste the looping code onto your laptop which you will bring to the EXPO. Make sure you bring your computer to class on April 28 -- We will practice the whole thing then.

Flyers Due April 26 Maymust state the Place:Newark Center Lobby , Date: May 7 , and Time; 11:00am- 12:00pm and in a few key words or sentences tell about your topic with a photo you took yourself, or from the following websites: Pixabay or Photos for Class. You may not just use any photo. On the back of the flyer, you must list all the topics which will be at the Expo: Child Nutrition, Child Trafficking, Child Refugees, Child Education, Child Labor.

Posters Due April 28 must state clearly the topic of the group. The photos you choose must illustrate your topic. You MUST have the URL of where you got the photo. Try to use photos from Pixabay or Photos for Class if at all possible. Otherwise, make sure to have the http:// on there. They must look professional and neat. You should not write too much on the posters, but write what is necessary. You may have you infographic on there if you want.

Infographic Due April 26 These should have information about your topic in an easy-to-read format - graphs, or facts and figures .. please try to use free photos as much as possible, or use Pixabay or Photos for Class. If you absolutely need to use a photo you find, make sure you have the URL listed with it.

Interactive Game Due April 28 - You should try this display/game with your friends or family before you try it out on your display table to make sure it works. Make sure you have ALL of your supplies. If you would like to use a Whiteboard, we can get one for you.


Listening and Speaking Objectives:
Communicate with your group and the teacher to create your project over a 4 week period.
Communicate with other Ohlone students about Global Children in Crisis during the Expo.
Raise awareness on the Ohlone Campus about Global Children in Crisis.

Reading and Writing Objectives:
Research your topic.
As a group, create a display which informs Ohlone students and staff about a topic concerning global children in crisis.
3-part Poster/Infographic/Flyer are written elements of the project.

To complete the Final -- Students do a reflection on Voicethread to talk about how the Expo went for them. They will answer 8 questions from the Reflection Questions handout and talk about the group experience.
